Search Engine Optimisation

Make your website a magnet with effective search engine optimisation (SEO) — which means build your website so that it pleases Google and other search engines, without compromising style and usefulness for your visitors.

There are over 175 million websites in the world according to the latest web survey by Netcraft.  Or to be exact 175,480,931 – and growing by over 3 million per month.

Apparently that means that the mighty internet has just turned over 1 trillion pages. Google's search spiders can race through about 50,000 pages per day - BUT obviously they can't put every page at the top of their rankings.

Most Website owners would like all their pages in the top 10 rankings because that’s the first page that shows when a search is done.  That first page and the next two pages in Google, Yahoo, MSN and lots of regional and specialised search engines, are where the majority of people make their choices from... and click through to a website.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

In a nutshell it means optimising your website so that the search engines rank it highly.  As the spider bots trawl the net, first they find and list the pages on your website.  Then if your website is search engine friendly, it moves up in the rankings and gets into at least the first 30 rankings.

The search engines couldn't give two hoots what you want to sell or the information you want to impart, be it common or obscure. Using good SEO tips you can own that top space or come close to it. This is the great equaliser of the internet market.

So you can see that search engine optimisation is important for success. You can't just throw a website up... you've got to be found.

The first of the various techniques used to optimise a website is called 'Keyword Research."  Getting this right, plus the likes of keyword density, links, site map, geographical qualifiers and headers will have you home and hosed.

There's a world of traffic out there. Your website will be found easily if you have correct search engine optimisation, whether you want to attract visitors in NZ or globally.

Geographical qualifiers can be used to tailor your website for the world, New Zealand, or your local area.

This is the beauty of the web.

Let's say you have a local business website for Wellington catering to fine dining; or a home-stay on the Rimutuka Hill; or offer counseling in Hokitika; or legal services in Christchurch; or yoga classes and exercise clothing on Auckland's North Shore — fine, your website can be search engine optimised for those potential local visitors to find you.
